I’m sure a lot of people know Silicon Knights is a gaming giant in the game industry. Too Human has been in the making on and off for 10 years claiming a trilogy over 3 games. Hype through the roof and all kinds of speculation. After many delays and issues with the Unreal 3 engine, Too Human finally arrives on August 19, 2008. But is it worth all the fuss it’s been getting in the press?

Yes, it was worth all the fuss, even though a lot of people really misunderstood the game. Too Human itself is a 3rd person action RPG, with a sci-fi twist on Norse Mythology. The idea is quite compelling. Yet, it still has its problems. You can go online with one of your friends and this is where Too Human could have really excelled. The game has a hub you can go to with your friend to buy and sell weapons and choose levels to fight in. But only you and one other player can go there. They should have made it possible with many other players going into a lobby showing their loot off. This would have made Too Human a lot more streamlined.

Visuals are decent.

The story of Too Human isn’t bad. Some parts are weak, but definitely promising. What really sets this game apart from other action RPGs is the controls. You can use the analog sticks to move and fight. It is simply a great system once you understand how to control it. All you have to do is hold the analog stick towards the enemy and you just start killing and chopping away. You can chain combos by using both joysticks as well as launching enemies in the air, and with the help of your friend you can shoot enemies while they’re airborne. These co-operative attacks make the game intriguing and rewarding and Too Human makes you feel like a champion when pulled off.

You have five classes to choose from, each having distinct playing styles. Each class has three skill trees to put points in, similar to Diablo. You can also choose to take a human path or a cybernetic one which grants you access to certain skills and cannons. Every class has its own spirit, spider drones and runes. This is where the game really gets deeper. Some drones are used for shooting down missiles or poisoning other enemies. It is based around your hit counter which gives you points in your combo meter. The combo meter is used for how many times you can spam your skills, mines, spiders and even controlling the speed of your attack.

Enemies galore.

However there is a limitation in the camera control and also some aiming issues. You can’t always aim or attack the target you want eventhough you have the ability to change angles and distance of the camera with a push of a button, which for some might take a little while to get used to. The “Take On Norse Mythology” with sci-fi twist really brings out interesting settings and art design. The game itself has decent animations and a great sense of speed especially if you play as a berserker. The graphics are detailed with waves of high quality textured enemies coming at you and tons of missiles on screen. The difficulty certainly ranks up as you progress with more enemies and huge robots coming at you. At times this could get really frustrating.

Well Too Human is a fantastic game, that with a little polish could have been extraordinary. This game is underestimated and it deserves a chance. It’s a fun and addicting experience that is very rewarding even with it’s faults and weaknesses with a possibility of over 100 hours of gameplay. You can’t go wrong with Too Human.
