Final Fantasy XIII, which is the flagship title of the Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy XIII collection, is expected to be released on the PlayStation 3 in Japan on the 17th of December 2009. In North America and Europe, FFXIII is expected to be released not earlier than April 2010 on both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles. The Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy XIII collection also consists of Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Final Fantasy Agito XIII. Final Fantasy XIII is set in the same universe of the latter games but this will not be a prequel or sequel to any other game.

In a nutshell, the story of FFXIII is set around the fal’Cie, creatures created from crystals which dwell inside their bodies. Beings marked by the fal’Cie for greater purposes are called l’Cie and these have a goal (called Focus) set by the fal’Cie. l’Cie have the ability to summon Eidolons (former GFs and Aeons) to help them complete their objective. Now the wilderness of the world called Pulse is having strange effects on people and the Cocoon government (shell-like city floating high above the surface) is banishing and putting in quarantine all influenced people with the help of a strong army, PSICOM. The mysterious Lightning together with exiles Vanille and Hope, fight their way past PSICOM soldiers tasked with bringing down the Cocoon government.

The battle system of FFXIII will maintain the command-based battles. Enemies are incorporated into the world environment but unlike FFXII, players and enemies are transported into a new battle screen, not in the main playing world. Working a bit different from previous titles, the Active Time Battle (ATB) system will be back in which users will be able to chain attacks for greater attack and power bonuses. For the time being the expectations for Final Fantasy XIII aren’t high because of the substantial time left for release. From the trailer below, you can see that Square Enix won’t fail in providing a visually stunning game.
